Choosing between Chiang Mai's top schools: SBS, ABS and ABA explained

Almost every parent we meet asks the same opening question: which Chiang Mai school is best for my child? The honest answer is that there is no single best β€” there is the school that fits your child's age, personality, English level and your family's budget. Here are the three we recommend most often.

SBS International School Chiang Mai

Curriculum: Cambridge (UK-derived, internationally recognised). Languages: fully English-medium. Annual fees (Secondary): around THB 320,000 – 370,000, plus admission fee and deposit ~THB 135,000 in year one. SBS is part of the Rangsit University group and offers tracks in Medical Science, Engineering, Business Enterprise, and Art/Design.

Who it fits: students aiming for top universities abroad (UK, US, Europe). Children who already have good English and can keep up in a fully English environment. Families who can afford the premium fees β€” and we can sometimes negotiate scholarships up to 75% for strong candidates.

Ambassador Bilingual School (ABS) β€” Bilingual track (EP)

Curriculum: American-Thai bilingual. Languages: roughly half English, half Thai. Annual fees: from THB 136,000 (Early Years) to THB 170,000 (Primary). A much more affordable international-quality option.

Who it fits: younger children, or students whose English is still developing. The Thai exposure also helps the child settle into local life.

Ambassador Bilingual Academy (ABA) β€” Intensive English (EEP)

Curriculum: 90% English / 10% Thai. Annual fees: similar to ABS but weighted towards English instruction. By far the most popular choice among Burmese families we work with.

Who it fits: the family that wants the affordability of ABS but the English intensity closer to a fully international school. Most of our SSELC boarders attend ABA β€” it strikes the right balance.
